Venture Capital firms that want to stay ahead of the curve cannot overlook the paradigm shift occurring nowadays in the deep tech sector, from generalist to specialist approaches.
Disruptive innovation usually arises at the intersection of multiple deeptech. The era of the technical generalist is coming to an end, as specialization and niche expertise become increasingly important in the startup ecosystem.
On one hand, founders will need to seek out investors who have a deep understanding of their industry and can offer valuable insights and connections. On the other hand, investors will need to focus on building expertise in specific sectors to stay competitive and deliver the best results for their portfolio companies. Both converging to the specialist approach. I’ve been noticing this trend recently in the photonics ecosystem.
Thank you, Hunter Walk, for these great insights that I fully agree with!
And what about you? What do you think?
